Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy vs Electronic Cigarettes
Here at Cambridge Hypnotherapy we obviously get many requests from clients asking about the success rates of hypnotherapy to stop smoking, and is it a better way to give up smoking than using electronic cigarettes. Well the answers are pretty simple… the success rates are VERY good, and yes it is a better way to stop smoking permanently.
Electronic cigarettes have become very well known over the last few years, and most days you can usually spot someone smoking one discreetly. However the marketing companies behind this rise can be very selective in the information that they release to you. Here are some of the risks:
Diethylene Glycol – Electronic Cigarettes are found to contain an anti-freeze component known as Diethylene Glycol. It is toxic to humans and can cause health worries on inhalation. This is one of the major Electronic Cigarette side effects.
Toxicity – Other than Diethylene Glycol, e-cigarettes also contain cancer-causing compounds like nitrosamines. If the cigarette accidentally breaks, humans may be exposed to such harmful components.
Nicotine – Health experts argue that electronic cigarettes contain nicotine, the basic element found in cigarettes. In an electronic cigarette liquid nicotine is used. Nicotine is an alkaloid medicine that is harmful for humans. A long drag on the cigarette can make you actually suck some of the liquid nicotine into your mouth. This can be very damaging for health. You have to drag the cigarette slowly for 3-5 seconds, which is not always possible to be careful about.
Success rates vary depending upon which study you analyse, however they don’t make for good reading however you look at it. Zyban studies have shown to be around 30% successful, with patches coming in at about 15%.
So how is hypnotherapy a better approach? Well very simply, we use hypnotherapy and NLP to change what smoking means to the client so that when in those same situations where they used to smoke, their unconscious mind no longer looks for a cigarette, and deals with it in a completely different way. Many smokers see smoking as a way to relieve stress and boredom etc, and we spend lots of time re-framing these beliefs so that their mind understands that by trying to be free from stress, its causing physical stress due to the chemicals and also mental stress as they are continuing to do something that they know they don’t want to do. Instead of relieving boredom, it’s stopping them from dosing something that they would really enjoy doing, and in fact its pretty boring just sitting there smoking. In 6 years of working with clients we have only worked with a handful of clients for a free back up session… seems like a better success rate to me!
