When people first come to us at Cambridge Hypnotherapy, one of the most common things they say is, “I’ve tried counselling before, but it didn’t really do anything for me.” And honestly, we hear it all the time. Counselling is the first port of call for so many people, and don't get me wrong, for some it can help. However for many others it just feels like an endless cycle of talking about their problems without actually moving past them.
That’s where hypnotherapy comes in. Call me biased, of course, but we’ve seen first-hand how quickly and effectively hypnotherapy can bring about real change. So, why does hypnotherapy often beat counselling when it comes to creating lasting results?

The traditional counselling model is all about talking through your past, your feelings, and your experiences. There’s nothing wrong with that, sometimes just having someone to listen is useful. But here’s the problem: talking about your problems doesn’t necessarily solve them. You can sit in a chair for months (sometimes years), revisiting the same story over and over, without feeling any lighter.
With hypnotherapy, we don’t just rehash the past, in fact we rarely even discuss it. We work with the part of your mind that actually runs your patterns, habits, and behaviours.... what we call your unconscious. Instead of circling around what went wrong, we help you change the way your mind responds now, so you can actually move forward. It’s about creating a new future rather than being stuck in the old story.

Let’s be honest, most people don’t want to spend months in therapy. Life’s too short, and when you’re struggling with anxiety, phobias, low confidence, or old habits, you want them gone as quickly as possible.
Counselling often follows a long-term mode. Weekly sessions stretched over months or years. With hypnotherapy, changes can happen in just a handful of sessions. That’s not us exaggerating – it’s just the way the unconscious mind works when you know how to access it.

One of the hardest parts of counselling is having to talk (in detail) about painful or traumatic experiences. We completely understand why that puts people off. Who really wants to dredge up every painful memory week after week? I know I certainly wouldn't!

Because we work directly with the unconscious, we can help release the emotional charge from old memories without you needing to describe them in all their glory.
