What do you want?
When I sit down with clients here at Cambridge Hypnotherapy, the very first question that I ask them is “What do you want?”. Pretty simple question, right? Well it seems it, but the majority of people I ask answer it in a different manner. They don’t tell me what they DO want to do, they tell me what they DON’T want to do.
“I don’t want to eat chocolate“
“I don’t want to keep feeling anxious“
“I want to stop avoiding things I find scary or daunting“
“I don’t want to use alcohol as a coping mechanism anymore”
“I don’t want to feel depressed“
Now in each of the above cases every outcome has been stated in a negative manner. It states how they don’t want to be or what they don’t want to do, which doesn’t unfortunately give us any indication as to what they actually want to be like or they want to do instead. Consider the other positive outcomes below as a comparison.
“I want to eat healthily”
“I want to feel calm”
“I want make the most of every possibility that presents itself”
“I simply want to use alcohol socially and handle things that bother me with a positive approach”
“I want to feel happy”
The unconscious mind is really like a sat nav in some respects. If you want to arrive at a specific destination, you have to input that specific destination. If you input where you don’t want to go, guess what’s going to happen? That’s right, it’ll take you to the exact place that you don’t want to go!
So the next time that you decide to make a change in your life, just take a second to work out what it is that you actually want. If you start out by identifying what it is that you don’t want, don’t panic or feel bad. Just think about what that would allow you to do and you’ll soon start to be on the right path to your goals!
If you would like to find out how we can help you identify your goals and achieve them within only 2-3 sessions, please don’t hesitate to call us on 01223 720120, or contact us here and we’d be glad to help.
